Prof Peter Newman
Professor Peter Newman AO is Professor of Sustainability at Curtin University in Perth, Western Australia, and an internationally recognised authority on sustainable cities, transport and urban planning.
He has written 26 books and more than 440 papers, including The End of Automobile Dependence and Net Zero Cities with Sustainability. From 2010 to 2025, he worked with the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, serving as Co-ordinating Lead Author on Transport for its 2022 Mitigation Report and as a Lead Author on cities.
He has advised governments at local, state and federal level, served on the Board of Infrastructure Australia, and helped save and rebuild Perth’s rail system.
In 2014, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia for his contribution to urban design and sustainable transport, and in 2018 he was named Western Australia’s Scientist of the Year.
